Thermostat Wiring: How To Wire Thermostat? (2,3,4,5 Wire Guide)

Thermostat Wiring Guide: How to Wire 2, 3, 4, and 5-Wire Thermostats

Thermostats act as control hubs for HVAC devices like furnaces and air conditioners. Understanding wire color codes—such as Red (Power), White (Heating), Green (Fan), Blue/Yellow (Cooling), and Black/Blue (Common C-Wire)—allows you to safely install and troubleshoot 2, 3, 4, and 5-wire thermostat setups.

Thermostats are the ultimate control hubs for HVAC devices such as furnaces and air conditioners. Thermostat wiring is a useful skill to know if you have to replace an old thermostat or check if something is wrong.

Quick Reference: Thermostat Wire Color Codes & Terminals

Wire ColorTerminal CodeFunction & Purpose
Black or BlueC (“Common”)Completes the 24V continuous electric circuit for newer digital and smart thermostats.
RedR, Rc, RhPower wire originating from the transformer, providing 24-hour AC power.
WhiteW1, W2Heating wire connected directly to furnaces or heat pumps (W2 is for second-stage heating).
Orange / Dark BlueO / BReversing valve control for heat pumps (O for cooling valve, B for heating valve).
GreenGFan wire that regulates the indoor air handler or blower fan.
YellowY1, Y2Compressor relay connection for cooling (Y1 for standard cooling, Y2 for second-stage).

Step-by-Step Approach to Thermostat Installation

1. Removing the Control Panel & Exposing Wires

Before you start, turn the power switch off at the device’s connection point. Nudge the control panel from above or below (or unscrew it if required) to expose the base and wires sticking out of the wall.

  • Pro Tip: Before disconnecting anything, take a clear photo of the existing wiring.
  • Secure the Wires: When removing the old base, spread the wires outward so they suspend across the 2×2 inch hole instead of slipping back inside the wall.

2. Reconnecting Wire by Wire

Using your reference photo or color codes, attach each wire to its corresponding terminal on the new thermostat base and tighten down the set screws securely. Give each wire a gentle tug to verify a firm connection before snapping the control panel back on.

Guide to 2, 3, 4, and 5-Wire Configurations

2-Wire Thermostat Wiring (Furnaces)

  • Wires used: Red (Power) and White (Heating).
  • Application: Used exclusively for basic heating furnaces; typically does not require a Common (C) wire.

3-Wire Thermostat Wiring (Boilers & Heaters)

  • Wires used: Red (Power), White (Heating), and Green (Repurposed as Common).
  • Application: Commonly controls boilers and hot water heaters utilizing a fan or relay signal.

4-Wire Thermostat Wiring (Heat Pumps & HVAC)

  • Wires used: Red (Power), White (Heating), Green (Fan), and Blue/Yellow (Cooling).
  • Application: Standard for systems that both heat and cool, providing necessary airflow regulation via the fan wire.

5-Wire Thermostat Wiring (Smart ACs, Heat Pumps & Furnaces)

  • Wires used: Red (Power), White (Heating), Green (Fan), Blue/Yellow (Cooling), and Black/Blue (Common C-Wire).
  • Application: The most versatile setup. The continuous 24V C-wire powers modern digital and smart thermostats that require constant energy even when the HVAC system is idle.
